August was the biggest one-month jump in crop prices since 2012... Global food inflation is increasing. Bloomberg’s Agriculture Spot Index shows 10 major products surged more than 13%. Last time it moved like that, food riots and the Arab Spring were still recent memory. This time it wasn’t one commodity dragging the rest, as everything in the food basket rose. Sugar +11.9% in August; Wheat +2.6% on the month, +15% over 12 months, recently at a three-year high. World Food Price Index +1.9%, is the highest since December 2022. Food prices overall +7.4% since January. Why it’s sticking: Black Sea shipments keep getting hit, and Russia plus Ukraine still feed a huge share of the world’s wheat; El Niño is hammering sugar and cocoa; and energy and fertilizer costs from the wider war complex are baked into the next harvest, not just this one. Soft numbers on a screen become hard numbers at the register. When wheat, sugar, and oil move together, groceries don’t wait for a central bank meeting. Source: @KobeissiLetter / Writer: Val
